Tethys Slips Behind Titan

  Saturn's moon Tethys with its prominent Odysseus Crater silently slips behind Saturn's largest moon Titan and then emerges on the other side.

Tethys is not actually enshrouded in Titan's atmosphere. Tethys (1062 kilometers, 660 miles across) is more than twice as far from Cassini than Titan (5150 kilometers, 3200 miles across) is in this sequence. Tethys is 2.2 million kilometers (1.4 million miles) from Cassini. Titan is about 1 million kilometers (621,000 miles) away. See PIA07774 to learn more about Titan's atmosphere.

These two color views were captured about 18 minutes apart, with the view on the right taking place first. These images are part of a mutual event sequence in which one moon passes close to or in front of another as seen from the spacecraft. Such observations help scientists refine their understanding of the orbits of Saturn's moons.

Images taken using red, green and blue spectral filters were combined to create this natural color view. The images were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Nov. 26, 2009. Image scale is 6 kilometers (4 miles) per pixel on Titan and 13 kilometers (8 miles) per pixel on Tethys.

The Cassini Equinox Mission is a joint United States and European endeavor. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team consists of scientists from the US, England, France, and Germany. The imaging operations center and team lead (Dr. C. Porco) are based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Very_interesting_and_special. Now it looks to me Tethys really being behind Titan. ( Now it's slightly more than 5 years ago since the Huygens Probe landed on Titan. )

The question is where are they merging to and where are they
merging from? Clearly, the atmosphere on Titan is not a
uniform one.

I wanted to know why does Titan orangish hue is not perfectly spherical around the edge of where Tethys is behind it (in the first image)

I don't think it's from the surface of Titan, probably there is some thickness differences around that area on the north, it seems that the bluish atmosphere is thicker than the orangish atmosphere on that side???? no??

I remember to have seen this in Cassini's raw images section. I expected you'd make a movie -as those you released last month-, but these color images are as impressive as them. Excellent work as usual; with a bit of imagination, one could think of the second Death Star moving behind Endor (the first one is Mimas)
