Saturn's northern hemisphere
These Voyager 2 images of Saturn's northern hemisphere were taken Aug. 19 from a distance of 7.1 million kilometers (4.4 million miles). North is in the upper right corner.
Both images show the same region of the planet, but the frame on the right was taken through a violet filter and the one on the left through a green filter. The violet image shows a bright band about 3,000 km. (1,900 mi.) wide north of three bright oval cloud systems. Two of these storms lose contrast in the green image and are barely visible. The third and largest feature, 3,000 km. (1,900 mi.) in diameter, is dark in the green and has a measured clockwise rotation.
These two images were used to construct the accompanying color release (P-23915C, S-2-12) detailing the same region of the planet.
The Voyager Project is managed for NASA by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
