Well, well. We seem to have a 'too hot' moon problem, don't we? A theory regarding Enceladus was in New Scientist last week; it specualted that there was some kind of 'inversion' going on, in which deeper, warming bits of the moon 'burst upward' (or something like that) every few million years, bringing deep warmth to the surface, and powering the geysers. I'm still hopin it's a burried Obilysk - or, at least, a nice interstellar space ship with the engine 'idling', while it waits for us to develope a REAL Space Program.

Undoubtely, a juicy orbit... and next one has another close Enceladus flyby. Good luck and may you find cryovolcanic activity on Dione.

Carolyn, has anyone on the team calculated a ball park figure for the mass loss from Enceladus over time? The tectonic flows indicated in the images tell us the jets have been feeding the E ring for a long time. Was this moon substantially more massive in its remote past? or to put it another way, how much weight has this snow ball lost on the tiger stripe geyser diet?

What a fsacinating and surprising moon Enceladus is turning out to be. The detail is remarkable. I sure hope someday humans are lucky enough to go to Saturn personally andsee these wonderful sights for themselves.
